Estimate your Australian income tax, Medicare levy and take-home pay on the 2024-25 resident rates — and see what your real marginal and effective rates are.

What this tool estimates

This calculator gives an indicative figure for the income tax a resident individual pays on a given taxable income, using the 2024-25 marginal rates. Enter your taxable income — assessable income after allowable deductions, not your gross salary — and the result shows your income tax, the Medicare levy if it applies, your total tax, and the take-home pay left over. It is a starting point, not a return.

How the number is built

Australia taxes income in brackets, so the rate on your last dollar is not the rate you pay across the whole amount. For 2024-25 there is no tax up to $18,200, then 16 per cent to $45,000, 30 per cent to $135,000, 37 per cent to $190,000, and 45 per cent above that. Most residents also pay the 2 per cent Medicare levy. The calculator separates your marginal rate (the rate on your next dollar) from your effective rate (tax as a share of total income) — the gap between the two is what people miss when they assume a pay rise will be eaten alive. What the tool leaves out matters too: offsets such as the low-income tax offset, the Medicare levy surcharge, HECS or HELP repayments, and the private health rebate all move the real figure.

Use it as a starting point

Treat this as a diagnostic, not a lodgement. If you are weighing salary sacrifice, an investment structure, or how a property is held, the tax outcome is one input into a larger decision about how your finances are built. Confirm the detail with your accountant, then book a strategy session and we will work through how the structure fits your borrowing.

The estimate is indicative, uses 2024-25 resident rates, and depends on your full circumstances; confirm your position with your accountant or the ATO.
